Westside Wardens

The Westside Wardens are the friendly, high-visibility presence that makes Broad Street and Brindleyplace feel safer and more welcoming for everyone — businesses, workers and visitors alike. Operating seven days a week across the district, the team delivers around 300 warden hours every week, acting as the eyes and ears of the BID on the ground.

All wardens hold a current first-aid certificate, meaning they can respond immediately to medical incidents whilst waiting for the emergency services. Day-to-day they report graffiti, fly-tipping and broken street furniture directly to Birmingham City Council, keep an open line of communication with West Midlands Police, and act as informal visitor guides — pointing people towards local attractions, advising on parking, and helping to create a warm first impression of the Westside area.

The Wardens work closely with the Hotel Watch radio network, a real-time intelligence-sharing scheme that connects hotels, bars and venues across the district. This partnership approach to street-level safety consistently ranks as one of the most valued aspects of BID membership in our annual satisfaction surveys.

The programme is not a security or enforcement service — wardens do not have powers of arrest — but their visible, approachable presence contributes directly to the safer, cleaner environment that makes Westside a competitive location for business and a destination people choose to return to.
