Walk of Stars
Birmingham's pavement of fame, celebrating the people who shape the city.
The Walk of Stars has been one of the most-loved features of Broad Street since the first plaque was unveiled in September 2014. Running from Five Ways to Centenary Square, the trail of solid-brass stars set flush into the pavement honours Birmingham figures who have shaped the city’s cultural life — in sport, music, comedy, broadcasting and beyond.
Among the names already recognised are rock legends Black Sabbath and Roy Wood, comedian and broadcaster Lenny Henry, beloved radio actor Norman Painting, comedian Frank Skinner, singer Beverley Knight, motor-racing commentator Murray Walker, entertainer Jasper Carrott, and broadcaster Frank Bough. Each star carries the recipient’s name alongside a brief description of their contribution to Birmingham life.
An independent panel reviews nominations each year, assessing cultural significance, public recognition, and breadth of representation across disciplines and communities. Westside BID provides administrative support and funds the casting and installation of each plaque as part of our wider public realm investment, but the panel makes all selection decisions independently.
Annual unveiling events have become a fixture in the Westside calendar, drawing crowds and media attention to the area. As the Walk of Stars continues to expand, it reinforces Broad Street’s identity as the cultural heart of Birmingham.
