Westside Wardens
Visible, high-vis BID staff providing reassurance, reporting issues, and first-aid support across the area.
The Westside Wardens programme puts uniformed, high-visibility staff on the streets of Broad Street and Brindleyplace seven days a week, from early morning through to late evening. Delivering around 300 warden hours per week, the team acts as the eyes and ears of the BID — and as a reassuring presence for businesses, workers and visitors alike.
Day-to-day, wardens report graffiti, fly-tipping and broken street furniture directly to Birmingham City Council, helping to keep the area clean and well-maintained without waiting for formal complaints to filter through. They work alongside the council’s street cleansing contractors and maintain an open line of communication with West Midlands Police, providing real-time intelligence on emerging issues.
All wardens hold a current first-aid certificate, enabling them to respond quickly to medical incidents before emergency services arrive. They also act as informal visitor guides — signposting tourists to attractions, advising on parking and public transport, and helping to create a welcoming first impression of the Westside area.
Launched in April 2016, the programme has become one of the most valued aspects of BID membership, consistently ranking highly in our annual business satisfaction surveys. The Wardens are not a security or enforcement service, but their visible presence contributes directly to the safer, cleaner environment that makes Westside a competitive location for businesses and a place people want to visit.
